[DIY] How to clean spots of mold on your wall

Mold and mildew release toxins in the air that aren't good for you to breathe in. Sometimes humidity isn't properly regulated and spots of mildew will appear on your drywall. In my experience, these blackish/green spots are common after removing wallpaper because paste has such a high water content and can cause problems if the walls weren't properly sealed to begin with.

Before you go out to the store for an expensive solution, simply take a 1/4 cup of bleach and mix it with 2 cups of water in a bucket. With a sponge, apply your homemade solution with a blotting motion to the affected spots on your walls.

You're done! After about 30 minutes the mold and mildew should have completely disappeared from the surface. The solution will also prevent new bacteria from growing.

I would highly recommend adding this solution to a bug sprayer and cleaning mildew from the exterior of your house whenever it occurs. The sprayer makes your job efficient and a lot easier to reach higher places.

Wow! That's as simple as it gets. A simple, cost effective DIY solution.

Your site is full of such jewels. Thanks a ton!

Will the bleach ruin the rest of the wall? Strip the paint or discolor it? I have always used vinegar and water on almost all cleaning projects (but not mold). I heard that hydrogen peroxide works great for mold too.

Bleach will oxidize your wall covering/ paint, and the mold will come back. You should find out why your wall is so wet that mold grows, and fix that.

I’ve found that there are a lot of different places that mold can get – the wall mold is especially troublesome, so I appreciate these tips. For other surfaces, I have used a combination of white vinegar and water in order to get it cleared out. Could I use that on non-white walls, as I’m worried that bleach will eat the paint?

I'll tell you what doesn't work.  I made a mess when I tried to remove a small patch of mold with one of those generic melamine foam erasers.  Maybe it was the paint or the wall's material, but I wound up smearing black streaks everywhere.  Next time I'll use bleach instead.  Thanks for the tip!

I have also heard that peroxide works the best for mold. I haven't ever tried it. It's true though, find the root cause and fix it. You can get rid of it, but it will probably come back.

You get two to three heaped tablespoons of borax , mix them with half glass of white vinegar and two glass of white water. Pour your solution in a spray bottle and apply it on the affected areas , and wipe the affected areas clean.

That's the best solution to implement for making the molds vanish.
