Repairing Outdoor Steps

As of late, I noticed my backdoor steps are deteriorating. I nearly fell and broke my neck when a chunck of the steps broke off from under my feet. My wife wants to hire someone (who will probably upcharge us), but I want to repair them myself. The steps were built using a light stone material with brick underneath. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Do you want to repair the existing or rip out and use wood? I would probably rip the stone out and build wooden steps. I think they will last longer. I have not had any luck trying to repair stone.
