Ripping up stairs

We have an old set of wooden stairs that need to be fixed. When do you say enough is enough and rip them out and make new ones? I thought about carpeting them but some of the boards feel flimsy. Thoughts?

What is on the stairs right now? If it is carpet, rip it off to see how the steps look. If the wood is rotten, can you just replace the bad ones? If not, then rip the whole set down and start over.

Oh, this sounds like a big project. I would definitely look to see how bad the stairs are under the carpet. If the wood isn't too bad, I'd fix it and put new carpet down. Building new steps could be fun though, it's just a huge project.
