How do you choose the type of curtains?
Quote from Nancymac on July 20, 2020, 12:11 pmChoose curtains that are at least one shade lighter or darker than the interior walls, as this will stop them from blending into the walls completely. To make the curtains stand out, choose colors that contrast and complement the colors of the walls and furnishings
Measure from the top of the window (plus the added inches of height where the curtains will hang from) to the floor. For a more traditional look, with the curtain slightly puddled on the floor, you'll want to add another two or three inches to your length.
A common rule for displaying curtains properly says the curtains finished width should be at least 2 times the width of your window (if not more - sheers can be 3 times the window width) to achieve a look of proper fullness.

Some of own first courtains in my home didnt follow the width rule, so they look very plain is some areas, I will take note for the future.

Quote from TonyFL on August 8, 2020, 11:55 pmChoosing colors is always something people struggle with. I'm a fan of going on the lighter side when compared to the interior paint. I really like your suggestion - they're short and simple. The traditional hanging of curtains seems to be really popular around these parts...
Nancymac, do you have an tips on curtain colors that would be totally abstract from the interior paint? Such as orange curtains with white walls. Here in Florida, everything in these homes are different colors. People really like the "beachy" feel.

Consider below when picking the fabric
- Choose a durable fabric for very sunny rooms
- Maximize natural light with sheer fabrics
- Select a heavy fabric when you need a lot of coverage
- Try blackout curtains to reduce light and noise

Quote from BobbiJ on January 13, 2021, 10:22 pmMy problem has always been that I didn't buy enough curtains. The width of the curtains was not big enough I see, after reading this. I now always buy an extra panel so the curtains look fuller.
I don't buy curtains that match the paint either. I like the contrast colors so the windows "pop".

Quote from Miranda on February 5, 2021, 12:45 amThat's a helpful list, Nancymac. Thanks for sharing! It will make curtain shopping much easier for most people. I usually try not to get long curtains that will pool at the bottom because the cats go wild hiding in it. I do like the way they look though.
